The Laurel in Grapevine, TX – Jenn and Davis

The Laurel

The Laurel transports guests to the heart of the Texas Hill Country without ever leaving Dallas – Fort Worth.  Located on over 6 acres of land and nestled next to the Cottonwood Creek green belt, The Laurel is the perfect setting for whatever event you may be planning.

The Color Palette

Jenn absolutely loves color and her main request once we delved into the design is that we wedding be colorful, especially the flowers!  We decided to stick with white as a base, for the linens and paper in particular, so that all of the flowers would really pop!  We used blue as our neutral choosing to bring it in with the napkins, cake table linen, and the escort cards.  For flowers, we chose to go with coral, pinks, orange, yellow, and just a little pop of red and lilac.  The venue has a wonderful beamed ceiling, so we were able to do a large statement installation of flowers hanging over the head table.  My favorite pop of color came by way of the little kumquats that we popped into the centerpieces!

From their wedding feature in D Weddings…

Returning to Jennifer and Davis’ college grounds in Austin made for a perfect day, which included hiking and dining at Uchiko. That night, Davis proposed at Auditorium Shores, with the downtown skyline in the background. Their April 24, 2016, wedding was filled with lush pink and yellow displays and plenty of sentiment, as Jennifer’s mother delivered a heartfelt speech paying tribute to the bride’s grandmother. –Olivia Gussoni, D Weddings

From their editorial in D Weddings Magazine…

Though Texas natives Diana Lopez and Jared Morris went to college in different states, their paths crossed in Dallas the summer after their freshmen year while attending the same career-prep program. Diana was immediately drawn to Jared’s then-long blond hair. And Jared, an outgoing type, liked that reserved Diana made him work for her attention.

“We flirted and hung out, but we knew we couldn’t do long distance,” Diana remembers. “So we just enjoyed each other’s company during the summer.”

Every summer thereafter, they would see each other through the program and resume their flirtation, never making their relationship status official until they both moved to Dallas after graduation. But after just three months of dating, they were dealt a blow when Jared’s job relocated him to Nebraska, and later to Minneapolis.

“Timing never seemed to be on our side,” Jared says. But tired of waiting for the right moment, he remembers, “We really just said, ‘To hell with it. We’re going to try it and see if it works.’”

After more than three years of dating long distance, Diana moved to Minneapolis to be with Jared. That’s when he knew it was real. “That showed me that she cared more about my happiness than about hers,” Jared says. “I knew she’d be there for me in the long haul.”

Jared asked Diana to marry him on a sunny Saturday afternoon in August 2015, before joining their family and friends on a sunset sailboat ride on Lake Ray Hubbard. Though they’d relocated to Houston, they chose Dallas for the wedding, where many of their friends and family live. They wanted an outdoor affair in the city and found the ideal venue in the Nasher Sculpture Center.

“A lot of outdoor weddings go toward country, and we didn’t want that,” Diana says. “We wanted it to be something modern, something urban, something within the city—and the Nasher was perfect.”

The couple hired Wendy Kay with Birds of a Feather Events to plan their Nasher Sculpture Center wedding and to make their big day one of a kind. “Wendy really opened our eyes as to what the possibilities would be,” Jared says. “We didn’t want to do the normal, cookie-cutter wedding. We really wanted to stand out and do something that was going to be a showstopper.”

Wendy blended organic with glitz for the March 26, 2016 nuptials. Lush florals from The Southern Table and agate stone details from The Hollow Geode accentuated the beauty of the Nasher’s grounds, while gold-sequined table linens and cakes by Sugar Bee Sweets added to the glamour. But the most showstopping moment came when the bride and groom surprised their guests with a choreographed first dance to the Bee Gees’ hit “More Than a Woman.” It was a routine they had worked on for months—with help from YouTube.

“We would move furniture and practice at night,” Jared says. “Diana picked up on it a lot quicker than I do, so there were some moments of frustration. But we had fun.” Diana also bought a reception dress from Bhldn that was more conducive to cutting a rug than the beaded Anna Campbell gown she wore for the ceremony.

Though rain had threatened all week, the weather ended up being perfect for a celebration under the stars. For a couple whose timing had long proven tricky, it seemed it was finally on their side. And as they danced into the night with 120 loved ones, Diana remembers wanting the moment to last forever.

“It happened so quickly,” she says. “I just didn’t want it to end.” -Jessica Otte, D Weddings

Rose Quartz and Serenity Wedding Inspiration – Pantone Colors of the Year 2016

        Rose Quartz and Serenity

A softer take on color for 2016: For the first time, the blending of two shades – Rose Quartz and Serenity are chosen as the PANTONE Color of the Year

As consumers seek mindfulness and well-being as an antidote to modern day stresses, welcoming colors that psychologically fulfill our yearning for reassurance and security are becoming more prominent. Joined together, Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace.

The prevalent combination of Rose Quartz and Serenity also challenges traditional perceptions of color association.

In many parts of the world we are experiencing a gender blur as it relates to fashion, which has in turn impacted color trends throughout all other areas of design. This more unilateral approach to color is coinciding with societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity, the consumer’s increased comfort with using color as a form of expression, a generation that has less concern about being typecast or judged and an open exchange of digital information that has opened our eyes to different approaches to color usage.

From the feature on Style Me Pretty…

Still on the hunt for the perfect color pairing for your Big Day? We’re about to make your planning process oh-so-easy. Say hello to rose quartz and serenity, Pantone’s color picks for 2016 that are sure to capture your undivided attention. So much so that we’ve bookmarked this pretty lil’ inspo from Charla Storey Photography as ‘the only color inspo you’ll ever need – now get planning!

Dallas Outdoor Elopement at the Aldredge House – Yolanda and Cedric

Dallas Outdoor Elopement at the Aldredge House – Yolanda and Cedric

          Dallas Outdoor Elopement

          Aldredge House

I just adore this venue, especially for smaller and more intimate weddings and celebrations, it is the perfect venue for a Dallas outdoor elopement, or garden wedding.  Yolanda and Cedric wanted their guests to feel like they had been invited over to their home for a backyard party (turned up a notch, of course!), and I knew that Aldredge House would be the perfect place.  The Aldredge House has both indoor and outdoor spaces as well as a greenhouse, and it photographs beautifully!

From their editorial in D Weddings Magazine…

Cedric Jones took a deep breath before calling Yolanda Hall one night. “I was taking a shot in the dark,” he says. That’s an understatement—he hadn’t seen her in more than a decade. In fact, the last time he’d spoken to her was after a sophomore class they’d shared at Prairie View A&M University in 1998. He didn’t know where she lived, worked—or even if he had the right number. “I didn’t think she would pick up—I didn’t know what to expect,” he says. “I just knew I didn’t want to regret not making the call to explore what our relationship could be.”

As luck would have it, she answered. Not only that, but Yolanda—who had since returned to her Denver hometown—was happy to hear from him. Conversation came easily, and the two spent hours catching up. Many more phone calls followed, and Yolanda invited him to a formal dinner in Denver.  “He allowed me to just be his friend,” Yolanda says. “Nothing else—no other expectations.”

A deep friendship soon morphed into a close partnership as Yolanda’s mother grew ill. They survived a long-distance relationship—with many trips to Dallas and Denver in between—before Yolanda moved to Texas. Not long after, her mother passed away and both of their fathers began to suffer health issues. “Our relationship became serious because of the importance of valuing life with someone you love,” Cedric says.

They scheduled their wedding day just three months after a casual conversation—but Yolanda was hardly stressed. With a laid-back personality that counters Cedric’s high-energy nature, Yolanda had no preconceived notions about her wedding day. She purchased bridal magazines and started browsing. She stumbled upon a wedding by Wendy Kay, owner of Birds of a Feather Events, who had designed a beautiful event in a past issue of D Weddings.

“It was at the Aldredge House, and we both fell in love with it,” Yolanda says. The wedding was small, intimate, and exactly what they envisioned. “We really just wanted those there who meant the most to us.” They called Wendy, who has a knack for planning weddings in a short timeframe, and when Cedric learned she graduated from his Duncanville High School alma mater, he was sold.

Yolanda selected the colors and let Wendy orchestrate an elegant wedding with lavish flowers from The Southern Table and a textural teal-hued cake by Layered Bake Shop bedecked in blooming peonies. The couple and their six-guest entourage arrived at the Aldredge House on that cool, sunny November day and felt the magic from the beginning.

As Yolanda walked down the aisle, “she was absolutely captivating,” Cedric says. And when the pastor began the ceremony, “a light wind came, leaves came, and the flowers and everything started moving. It was a soft wind, and very spiritual, as though Yolanda’s mom’s spirit was with us. We had an open seat for her. It blessed the union right when we started.” Just like Cedric’s audacious first phone call—and in their relationship—the timing was kismet.  – Jessica Elliott, D Weddings
