Favorite Vintage Ring Boxes

As a lot of you guys who follow me on Instagram know (@birdsofafeatherevents), I have a complete obsession with vintage ring boxes and my collection is a bit out of control – especially considering the fact that I only do 8-10 weddings each year and about 5 editorial shoots.  Some may argue that I have more vintage ring boxes than I will ever use or need.  To those people I say, “SO!?”  Below are some highlights of ring shots from this year’s weddings and editorial shoots.  I have a few more coming down the pipe from some workshops I designed/styled the last couple of weeks and I’ll add those as soon as we get the film back.  Comment and let me know which one is your favorite!

Brides rings styled in a light green box with dark ivory interior, and grooms ring styled in a really unique brown box.

I’ve been on the hunt for another ring box in this style for years, but have not been able to find one.

Stunning ring by Trumpet and Horn styled in a plum ring box with a dark ivory interior from a shoot we did

in NYC.  Charla Storey Photography usually shoots light and airy, but we were losing sunlight and she had to

push her film.  I’m not complaining about the result, loving the dark and moody feel.

A simple wedding band from an elopement we did styled in this once gold ring box that has taken on a brass

tone with age.  I love the simple composition of this shot by  Charla Storey Photography

I think this is my all time favorite ring box.  I just love the octagonal shape of it and the fact that is in near

pristine condition.  The cute little pink button closure doesn’t hurt either.  Shot by Charla Storey Photography

Ok, so this technically is not a ring box, but I couldn’t not share this stunner!  This antique pearl ring actually belonged to my great aunt and was

passed down to me.  We decided to style it a bit unconventionally for the editorial featured on Magnolia Rouge.  Photographed by NBarrett Photography

Clark Gardens Wedding – Kendall and Tyler

Clark Gardens is a true hidden gem in the North Texas Hill Country and is the perfect garden for your perfect day. The 35-acre public botanic garden is tucked away down a country road between Weatherford and Mineral Wells, just outside Dallas/Fort Worth. Clark Gardens offers a variety of venues for weddings and receptions, including two permanent reception tents and a breathtaking sandstone chapel, all creating the ideal location for an unforgettable event. Each venue showcases its own charm with European-style fountains, waterfalls, blooms bursting with color, and nature in every corner. Whether you’re planning an intimate gathering or a black-tie affair, Clark Gardens provides a natural beauty and classic elegance that cannot be matched.

    From Style Me Pretty…

A Fall wedding in Texas with Secret Garden Style

The beginning of September signals our official kick off to All.The.Fall.Things. Think cozy sweaters and pumpkin spice lattes plus the most stunning autumn weddings we can get our hands on. We scoured the Internet for the best of the best fall affairs and Kendall and Tyler’s big day perfectly fit the bill. They tied the knot at Clark Gardens in Texas with beautiful nods to the season all throughout the day. Birds of a Feather planned and styled, Charla Storey photographed, and it’s all waiting for here.

This is a gorgeous, secret garden fall wedding. The tones are deep and complementary to the season while keeping your favorite garden colors, and the venue. This venue has not had an event on this part of the property, so it was refreshing to use an area that fit the aesthetic desired. Live acoustic music and dinner al fresco made for a gorgeous fall Texas evening for Kendall and Tyler.

      Best Weddings of 2016

      Best Weddings of 2016

      Best Weddings of 2016

Wow, you guys!  2016 is in the bag, and what a crazy year it was!  Lots of good and bad this year, but I’m going to choose to focus on the good and give a mini recap of all that went down with me personally, and with Birds of a Feather and the amazing clients we served this year.

      Personal

Often times my personal life is so intertwined with my business life it is hard to really step back and define what happened to me, vs what happened in my business.  This year was a bit different as I decided to trim down on the amount of weddings I did so that I could focus on my clients and their needs a bit more.  This took me from working a 60+ hour work week, to a normal 40 hour work week.  Idle hands, right?  Here are a few things I did this year just for me…

      • Binge watched The OC, Roswell, How to Get Away with Murder, Sleepy Hollow, Parks and Rec, 30 Rock, Orange is the New Black, Bob’s Burgers, Stranger Things, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and Master of None
      • Made it through all 7 Harry Potter books – TWICE
      • Went to Universal Hollywood on Halloween
      • Went to Disney and Universal in Orlando over Thanksgiving
      • Celebrated our 6th wedding anniversary

      Professional

So many wonderful things happened this year at Birds of a Feather, and it has me really fired up to do my goal setting sesh for 2017!  Now that we are going into our 7th year of business, the motto is less “hustle” and more “flow”.  I’ve tried the whole thing where I glorified being busy, and it made me feel neither happy or successful – just tired and worn out.  I feel like we are in a groove now that works for us, and I’m going to continue striving for happiness and balance in my business.  Below are a few things we achieved this year…

      • Created and taught the design course for the American Association of Certified Wedding Planners
      • Traveled to Los Angeles, Austin, and Charleston to do site visits and vendor meetings for clients
      • Did editorial shoots for My Wedding Magazine, Style Me Pretty,  and Magnolia Rouge
      • Had a wedding get back to back covers of D Weddings Magazine
      • Published by Martha Stewart Weddings
      • Cover of My Wedding Magazine
      • Had a wedding included in Style Me Pretty’s list of Best Weddings of 2016
      • Executed a beautiful wedding in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA
      • Traveled to New York to help with the Claire Pettibone show (shout out to The Southern Table for landing that amazing gig!)
      • Did editorial shoots in California, South Carolina, Texas (of course), and New York
      • Voted a Top 10 Wedding Planner by My Wedding Magazine
      • Invited to join Style Me Pretty’s Little Black Book
      • Attended Bliss and Bespoke in Charleston, SC
      • Published in print in D Weddings Magazine, The Knot Magazine, and My Wedding Magazine, along with numerous blog features
      • Increased our following on Instagram from 3K to 12K
      • Automated our planning process to include an online system to help us and our clients
      • Did 9 beautiful weddings with some amazing vendors and clients!

Pottery Inspired Wedding Editorial – My Wedding Magazine

Pottery Inspired Wedding Editorial – My Wedding Magazine

      Pottery Inspired Wedding Editorial

From the cover story in My Wedding Magazine…

Once upon a time planning a wedding meant a few certain things: a local church, a simple reception and a dress your mother may have worn on her wedding day. But the contemporary wedding is an entirely different creature. Maybe it’s modern romance, maybe it’s Pinterest; no matter the cause, the effect is a celebration that’s less about tradition and more about personalization.  The modern wedding is an opportunity to strike out and forge your own pathway through the pretty. You’ll pick a theme, a location, the right décor, every decision leading you toward the event you’ll always remember. Still, this wedding isn’t only about the items you place in your event space, no matter how stunning they look. Rather, it’s about the personal styles and enduring relationship those details both highlight and reflect.  Wendy Kay of Birds of a Feather Events, who designs and styles numerous weddings each year, believes that getting a sense of a couple’s personal style and relationship is infinitely more important than relying on what the rest of the world thinks a wedding should look like.  But without loads of inspirational images, where does a wedding planning couple begin? It’s surprisingly simple. Start with yourselves. Examine your values – is a big wedding with all of your friends and family in attendance essential, or are you more interested in an intimate ceremony that’s centered on you and your vows – and think about the kinds of experiences and weddings you’ve loved attending in the past. What did those events have in common? Was it the food? The packed dance floor? Once you establish your preferences for the framework of your wedding, you can move into the aesthetic of your event. This is where tools like mood boards come in handy, although we still recommend you proceed with caution. In Wendy’s experience, it’s easy to get sucked into the miasma of inspiration and lose sight of yourselves and your relationship. If you do turn to that stack of ideas, use it as a reference point instead of a step by step guide. Start your search for details and ideas by looking at your personal style and moving your gaze outward into your home, your hobbies, the way you like to spend your time together and even the kinds of vacations you take.  By beginning with a greater understanding of the aesthetic and ideas you already love, you’ll provide your wedding details with a stronger foundation and you’ll stay true to yourselves. Now is the time to hire your vendors and invite them into your vision.  Choose vendors whose work you love – and then, when you’re settled in and focused on creating this dream wedding together, give them the space to be free to create that work you already know you adore. Hiring a florist because you love their whimsical, garden-inspired arrangements is the perfect decision until you try to force that signature style into a modern aesthetic. But when your loves and their talents meet in the middle, the collaborative result is sure to be unmatched.  This gradual development of your wedding décor may feel like a slow process, but wedding planning is rarely a sprint. And the result is organic and unpretentious. If ever you find yourself doubting your decisions, remember this one thing:  Your wedding day is about more than sparkle or sophistication alone. It’s about more than flowers on a table or invitation suites. It’s a celebration of your story and your future; this wedding is singularly you.

        Griffith Park Wedding Editorial

        Griffith Park Wedding

With over 4,210 acres of both natural chaparral-covered terrain and landscaped parkland and picnic areas, Griffith Park is the largest municipal park with urban wilderness area in the United States. Situated in the eastern Santa Monica Mountain range, the Park’s elevations range climb high so you and your guests can enjoy spectacular views. With an arid climate, the Park’s plant communities vary from coastal sage scrub, oak and walnut woodlands to riparian vegetation with trees in the Park’s deep canyons. The California native plants represented in Griffith Park include the California species of oak, walnut, lilac, mountain mahogany, sages, toyon, and sumac. These all help create a luscious backdrop for your perfect wedding day. Gather your loved ones at your Griffith Park wedding to celebrate the most romantic day of your life.

        Jam Out

Some of my favorite editorials come from chaos – when not having a plan is the plan.  This mainly happens when I am traveling with my creative team for a workshop, wedding, site visit, what have you, and we decide last minute that we “want to do something.”  Nothing is planned in advance with the exception of securing a dress, and sometimes a model.  I’m emailing and or calling venues at the airport – sometimes after we land, and trying to secure larger rentals the morning of.  The chairs from this editorial came from the Air BNB we were staying it.  You get the idea.  These shoots are what we refer to as a “jam out”.  They are stressful and sweaty and cause me to purchase things at various stores and then cringe the next day when I have to return them.  Is it worth it?  Yeah.

        From Magnolia Rouge…

Have you ever seen a more eye popping floral arrangement? This utterly delightful creation by The Southern Table set the tone for this California inspiration by Magnolia Rouge fave, Dallas wedding photographer, Charla Storey. Styled by Birds of a Feather Events it features a stunning Tara LaTour wedding gown with a delicate top and a full tulle skirt. The full shoot appears in Issue 16 of the magazine.
